It was used to improve strength, for "detoxification," as an antibiotic, and even as a treatment for scurvy. While no one is using apple cider vinegar as an antibiotic anymore (at least, no one should be), it has been touted more recently for weight loss.

I drank a gallon of filtered or purified water with 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar and a liver detox extract (consisting mainly of turmeric, dandelion, and milk thistle) daily with and in-between meals. The apple cider vinegar was said to help “soften liver stones”.
